Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is caused because of severe deficiency of insulin, and so it requires life-long treatment with insulin and regular monitoring of blood glucose levels.
Only 5% of people with diabetes have this form of the disease.
India accounts for most of the children with T1DM in South-East Asia. According to the 6th edition of the International Diabetes Federation diabetes atlas, India has 3 new cases of T1DM/100,000 children of 0–14 years (International Diabetes Federation; 2013).
